The back story

About Folegandros: the Cyclades unspoilt

Folegandros is the island for people who want the Cyclades at their most authentic: no airport, no big resorts, and a clifftop Chora where evenings are spent in shaded squares.

A place of exile

Barren and remote, Folegandros was used as a place of exile in the 20th century. Its isolation preserved the island’s character.

Chora

The Chora sits on the edge of a cliff high above the sea, with a medieval kastro whose houses form a wall, and a chain of squares filled with tavernas.

Folegandros has no nightclubs; it has a village on a cliff and long evenings in its squares.

Beaches and walking

Beaches such as Katergo and Livadaki are reached by boat or on foot, and paths cross the island.

Our advice: stay in Chora, walk to the Panagia at sunset, take the beach boat to Katergo, eat matsata in Ano Meria, and arrive by ferry from Piraeus or nearby islands.
