Greek islands essentials

The practical things worth knowing before you set sail.

Money

Greece uses the euro. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small tavernas, kiosks, beach boats and villages; small islands have few ATMs. Fish is usually priced by the kilo: ask before ordering.

Ferries and the wind

Book July and August ferries early. In summer the meltemi blows from the north and can cancel fast boats; conventional ferries are steadier. Never plan a ferry on the same day as an international flight.

Health and safety

Call 112 for emergencies and 166 for an ambulance. Small islands have health centres, and serious cases are transferred to larger hospitals, so travel insurance is strongly recommended. Pharmacies are excellent for minor problems.

Sun, heat and water

The sun is strong from May to September: carry water, a hat and sun protection, and avoid long walks in the midday heat. Many islands rely on desalination; bottled water is widely used for drinking.

Churches and island life

Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries. Island life starts late: dinner at nine or ten, bars after eleven. Many hotels and restaurants open from spring to October only.
