The back story

About Greek island food: what to eat where

Every island has its own specialities, shaped by its soil, sea and history.

The Cyclades

Santorini: fava, cherry tomatoes, white aubergines and Assyrtiko wine. Naxos: graviera and kitron. Sifnos: revithada and mastelo. Mykonos: kopanisti cheese and louza. Folegandros: matsata pasta.

Crete

Olive oil, wild greens, dakos, cheeses, snails and raki.

Ask what the island grows, and order that.

Fish

Fresh fish is sold by weight; ask the price before ordering.

Our advice: eat at least one meal in a mountain village, ask what is local and seasonal, and try the island’s wine.
