The back story

About Flying or sailing to the islands

Many islands have airports with short flights from Athens, and several have direct seasonal flights from Europe.

Islands with airports

Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Milos and Syros in the Cyclades; Heraklion and Chania on Crete; Rhodes; Corfu; and many others.

Open-jaw trips

Fly into one island and out of another, using ferries in between, to avoid backtracking.

Fly into one island, sail between the rest and fly home from another.

Athens

Athens International Airport links to Piraeus by metro, suburban railway and the X96 bus, and to Rafina by KTEL coach.

Our advice: fly to Crete, Rhodes and Corfu; use ferries in the Cyclades; and consider flying into Santorini or Mykonos and out of the other.

Why it's on our list

  • Many islands have airports
  • Fly in, ferry between
  • Corfu and Rhodes are best by air

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with Flying or sailing to the islands before you go.
