The back story

About Amorgos: the island of the big blue

Amorgos is for walkers and for anyone who wants the deep blue of the Aegean without the crowds.

The monastery

Hozoviotissa, founded in the 11th century, clings to a sheer cliff above the sea.

The Big Blue

Luc Besson filmed The Big Blue here in the 1980s, and the wreck of the Olympia still lies in the south.

Amorgos is the bluest water you will ever swim in.

Walking

Old paths link Chora, the monastery, Aegiali and the hill villages.

Our advice: stay in Chora or Aegiali, walk early, visit the monastery in the morning, and plan for longer ferry times.
