Samaria Gorge
The great walk of Crete

About Samaria Gorge
The Samaria Gorge National Park is usually open from spring to autumn, depending on the weather. The classic hike starts at Xyloskalo on the Omalos plateau and descends to the village of Agia Roumeli on the south coast, which has no road: you leave by ferry to Chora Sfakion or Sougia. Allow five to seven hours, start early, wear proper boots and carry water. Organised trips from Chania handle the transport; check the park’s opening dates before you go.
