Naxos is big and mountainous, and a car is the best way to see the villages of the interior, Halki, Filoti and Apiranthos, and the beaches of the far south and north. Local firms such as Escape in Naxos and Auto Moto Falcon deliver to the port, airport and hotels, and Scootermania rents scooters and bicycles. Book ahead in July and August, check what the insurance covers and bring your licence; check whether yours needs an International Driving Permit. Scooters above 50 cc need a motorcycle licence, and helmets are compulsory. Mountain roads are narrow and winding: allow time.
